Centrifugal pumps are very common in the brewing process. In the brewery we will use centrifugal pumps in the wort transfer process.
As it evolved, we started to use diaphragm pumps in some places. It is mainly used for beer transfer in the fermentation process because there is also yeast in it.
For example, some customers mentioned using centrifugal pumps for beer transfer, working with beer guns, which is not really advisable.
Diaphragm pumps are the right choice. Diaphragm pumps are gentler in their operation and can promote oxygenation.
Regarding diaphragm pumps and centrifugal pumps, they have some differences in construction. A diaphragm pump is more leak-proof than a centrifugal pump, so it helps to maintain the maximum amount of CO2 than a centrifugal pump. This is why we usually recommend diaphragm pumps to work together with hop guns.
For wort transfer and CIP cleaning, on the other hand, a centrifugal pump is more suitable because of its high power.
