2019 Black Hops Wrap Up

2019 has been an epic year for Black Hops, and first and foremost, we would like to thank all of our customers and friends for supporting us during what has been the most challenging and rewarding year for us to date.

Although we’ve only been opening our own brewery in Burley for 3.5 years, we spent our fifth year as Black Hops this year and have been around for 2 years before other breweries did small-scale contract brewing. There were many milestones this year, and in this post we’ll cover the major ones.

January: Pale Ale #14 Gabe’s Spiciest 100

With GABS making its debut on the list at 55 and 20 in 2018, expectations were high for this year’s GABS Hottest 100 Craft Beer Countdown. This time around, three beers made the final list: the Pale Ale, the Hornet and the Super Hornet.

We had a wonderful day at HQ counting down the beers, and AliCat wrote down every single one on the wall.
The results: Super Hornet scored a pretty good 88 points, Hornet scored a pretty good 43 points (up from 55 the year before), and the flagship pale ale scored 14 points.

At this point, the beer has yet to reach interstate, except for a handful that reached Sydney, so being near the top 10 nationally is a huge result that we are all very excited about.

Voting is currently underway for this year and we would love to be in the top 10 this year. Click this link to vote!!!

January: Black Hops II Equity up Crowdfunding – Record Breaking Results

To help fund a new brewery in the north end of the Gold Coast, we closed a record-breaking equity crowdfunding campaign, including the following highlights.

The first brewery in Australia to successfully complete an equity crowdfunding campaign.
It was the fastest campaign ever to reach the minimum target (8 hours and 15 minutes) in Australia.
It was the first and only campaign to reach the highest goal ($400,000 in 6 days) at that time.

The first Australian company to run a rewards-based campaign on Pozible and a successful stock campaign on its sister platform Birchal.

But more important than the record, we offered our long-time customers and devotees the opportunity to own a portion of the stout hops.

We now have an investment team of over 550 friends (Team Alpha) that invest in the success of Black Hops, and this year we were able to give them something very unique. Some of these were included in rewards for the event, such as beer reservations,

restaurant discounts, custom numbered key rings and shirts. But we also gave Team Alpha members some additional exclusive perks, like our limited tastings and our first annual Alpha Brew Day, where we hosted a private event to brew an exclusive beer for team members only.
